¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

I’ve been a beer enthusiast since an early age, mainly because of the close relationship between beer and heavy metal. It has always been my favorite beverage during fun times. Beer and music can bring people together in a curiously special bond. I greatly enjoy being an agent who promotes this wonderful human connection—and making a living from it.

In the mid-2000s, my interest in understanding beer more deeply was sparked when some relatives invited me to brew beer at home. A few years later, while working as a creative director, I participated in a brainstorming session to create the brand for the first microbrewery in Panama. Seeing the boom that craft beers were experiencing, I saw an opportunity to quit advertising and dedicate myself fully to the beer industry.

In 2014, I began my journey as a beer professional, studying and formally training with various organizations. Since then, I have managed to stand out in different fields as an entrepreneur, consultant, and educator. I also became a beer judge at competitions held in more than 20 countries, building a large network of colleagues and opportunities across the globe.

Today, I’m the regional sales director for BrauKon in Germany.

For me, having the opportunity to participate as a judge in the largest and most important beer competition in the world, next to internationally respected professionals, is an honor, a privilege, and a great reward for dedication.

¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

Llevo en el sector de la cerveza toda mi carrera, pero al principio en la periferia, y llegué a él por la vía de las relaciones públicas y el marketing. A medida que crecía el mundo de la cerveza artesana, también lo hacía mi interés y mi pasión por el tema. Tuve la suerte de comenzar mi larga relación con la Brewers Association allá por 2006 y poco a poco fui asumiendo más responsabilidades. Mi papel se fue ampliando hasta que en 2019 me nombraron embajador de la cerveza artesana estadounidense para Europa. Es un honor y un privilegio trabajar para la Brewers Association y me siento increíblemente orgulloso de representarla tanto cuando viajo al extranjero como cuando estoy en casa, en el Reino Unido.

Para mí, la cerveza no es sólo una profesión, sino una forma de vida. Me encanta la gran variedad de sabores y aromas de la cerveza. Es muy versátil y es el acompañamiento perfecto para la comida. Me encanta la comunidad cervecera y la gente que hace que esta industria sea especial. Todo el mundo es amable, acogedor y está unido en una apreciación compartida de esta hermosa bebida. Es un espacio de colaboración único y me considero muy afortunado de estar asociado con algunas de las mentes cerveceras con más talento del sector.

¿Por qué participa como juez en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza? ¿Qué significa para usted ser jurado en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza?

Juzgar en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza es la cima de mi viaje cervecero y el estándar de oro de los jueces cerveceros. Es como competir en los Juegos Olímpicos. La calidad de la competición es insuperable, desde la calidad mundial de las cervezas participantes hasta el alto nivel de los jueces y la organización profesional y fluida entre bastidores. De todos los concursos que he juzgado en el mundo, la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza es el mayor, el más prestigioso, el más internacional, el mejor organizado y el más profesional de todos, en mi humilde opinión, por supuesto.

Ser seleccionada como juez para la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza es un gran honor y me llena de orgullo. Me encanta juzgar porque concentra mi mente en todo lo que he aprendido sobre la cerveza y su elaboración. Al igual que un atleta olímpico, tengo que estar en lo más alto de mi juego y eso es una perspectiva excitante y emocionante.

Hasta ahora sólo he sido jurado en una Copa Mundial de la Cerveza (la de 2023 en Nashville), pero quedé totalmente impresionado por el nivel de los participantes, la calidad de los jueces y la organización de la competición. Fue una experiencia personal enormemente enriquecedora y gratificante que espero repetir pronto.

¿Qué más le gustaría que supiera el mundo?

Juego al hockey (hockey sobre hierba para mis amigos estadounidenses) en un club del suroeste de Londres desde hace muchos años. Es muy divertido, una oportunidad para correr y quitarse las telarañas antes de tomar una cerveza en el bar. La temporada pasada no perdimos y ascendimos a una liga superior. Esta temporada puede ser diferente. Estoy casado, tengo tres hijos adultos y un perro muy vivaracho.

¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

I started home brewing in 2009 and fell in love with beer industry. I co-founded my first brewery in 2014, Santo Domingo Brewing Co. We started small and grew to a 10bbl system. I was the COO overseeing the brewers. In 2016, I co-founded Cerveceria Punta Cana, and we started importing our flagship beer, Canita, with the intention to gain market to be able to start with a bigger brewery. I sold SDBC in 2020. Our first locally brewed Canita came out April 2021, that year we brewed 1,400 HL and we have grown to almost 24,000 HL a year.

I started my formal beer education in 2018 with the Cicerone Certification Program and in 2019 obtained the Certified Cicerone level and in 2024 the Advanced Cicerone level.

I started judging beer in 2019, and been traveling to beer cups every year after the pandemic to Colombia, Mexico, Brasil, Argentina, and the World Beer Cup in 2024.

Beers is not only a job for me. It is a way of life, and traveling to different beers competitions has become my way of meeting new people and seeing new places.

Judging at the World Beer Cup means judging the best beers in the world with the best judges out there. It means that at each table you share feedback with judges with vast experience in the styles being judged.

¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

I have been working in the beer industry since early 2014, and later that year I co-founded a Polish craft beer brand, Browar Kingpin, where I have also served as brewmaster since 2018. I am a well-traveled international beer, cider, and mead judge with experience at the World Beer Cup, European Beer Star, Brussels Beer Challenge, Birra dell’Anno, International Beer Cup Japan, Concurso Brasileiro de Cervejas, and many other competitions. I have been the co-founder and president of the Polish Craft Brewers Association since 2018, and I also serve as an organizer, proctor, and grader for BJCP Beer, Cider, and Mead Judge certifications. Additionally, I am the BJCP EMEA Regional Director, a WSET Certified Educator for Award in Beer qualifications, a contributor to periodicals, and I run beer education classes and regular tasting events.

To me, beer embodies a rich blend of history, craftsmanship, and creativity. It’s a medium for exploring flavors, places, and stories, fostering communities, and celebrating cultural traditions. The art and science of brewing continually inspire me, offering endless opportunities for personal development and enjoyment.

I judge at the World Beer Cup because it is the largest and one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world, where I get to meet many great beer professionals and taste some of the best beers in the world. It’s a great opportunity for me to both contribute to the evaluation as well as make new friends and master my skills. To be a judge at the World Beer Cup is to be part of the judging elite and to have my competences in the field recognized.
