¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

While studying at university, I worked in a microbiology lab. I was fascinated by microorganisms and wanted to learn more about them. After earning my degree in food science, I was determined to find a job that combined microorganisms and food. How bacteria and yeast transform flavors and aromas was—and still is—impressive to me. Fortunately, I discovered the fantastic world of beer.

My first job after graduation was as sensory lead at the largest brewery in Argentina. Today, 12 years later, I still dedicate my career to educating and spreading beer knowledge and appreciation at every opportunity.

¿Por qué participa como juez en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza? ¿Qué significa para usted ser jurado en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza?

Judging at the World Beer Cup has been a dream of mine since I started my career. I remember attending Craft Brewers Conferences and WBC awards ceremonies, thinking, “Wow, will I ever be part of this huge event?” The day I received the invitation to judge in Las Vegas in 2024 was one of the best days of my beer career. I was so excited telling everyone about it that I almost forgot to reply to the email and nearly missed out on the competition!

The news was so big in my country that I was interviewed by the most important local newspapers about my experience as a judge representing Argentina. That’s how significant being a WBC judge is to me. 🙂

¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

Hace veinte años, en Japón, no tuve ocasión de probar la diversidad de la cerveza artesana. En un viaje de negocios a Estados Unidos, quedé totalmente sorprendido por la calidad, el aspecto, el aroma y el sabor de la cerveza artesana. Después de esa experiencia, me uní a la Craft Beer Association y me di cuenta de que la educación es importante para comprender el valor de la cerveza; que la calidad de las cervezas es fundamental para pasar mejores momentos; y que la colaboración entre asociaciones y competiciones mundiales es muy importante. Ahora colaboro como profesor y director de concursos en la International Beer Cup de Japón y en los Japan Great Beer Awards.

¿Por qué participa como juez en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza? ¿Qué significa para usted ser jurado en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza?

Mi primera Copa Mundial de la Cerveza fue en San Diego en 2012. Quería contribuir a esta industria probando grandes cervezas y haciendo comentarios sobre su innovación. Como persona de Asia, también quería compartir mi experiencia local con la cerveza y los jueces de aquí. Además, quería experimentar una competición de talla mundial para aprender y mejorar nuestras competiciones en Japón.

¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

Llevo más de 15 años trabajando en el sector de la cerveza. Me atrajo el sector porque quería dar a conocer y apreciar mis cervezas artesanales locales. La cerveza es una bebida tan variada que puede apreciarse a muchos niveles. Siempre hay algo más que aprender sobre ella y, sin embargo, por compleja y polifacética que sea, sigue siendo accesible.

¿Por qué participa como juez en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza? ¿Qué significa para usted ser jurado en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza?

Tengo el honor de ser jurado en la Copa Mundial de la Cerveza desde 2010. Para mí, es un lugar donde compartir mis conocimientos y mi pasión. Es un lugar donde aprender de mis colegas y seguir perfeccionando mi paladar. Es un lugar para probar las últimas interpretaciones de estilos y detectar tendencias emergentes. Es una comunidad de personas con ideas afines de todo el mundo con las que espero volver a ponerme en contacto cada año para enterarme de lo que ocurre en el mundo de la cerveza a nivel internacional.

¿Cómo entró en la industria cervecera? ¿Por qué le importa la cerveza?

For me, beer is everything; it’s both my profession and my hobby. When I’m not working at the brewery, I’m judging competitions, reading books about beer, taking courses, or simply enjoying some beers. My life has meaning, thanks to beer.

I started working at Polar Brewery in Venezuela in 2015 after graduating as a biologist. I began as a brewer apprentice and then moved to Germany, where I worked at Doemens Academy in the laboratory and pilot plant. There, I took a course to become a brewmaster and graduated in 2019. After becoming a brewmaster, I started working at the Institut Romeis, performing chemical and analytical controls for breweries in Germany and around the world.

In 2021, I began working for Oettinger Brewery as a quality assurance specialist (microbiology and chemistry), and since January 2023, I’ve been working for Paulaner, also in quality assurance. During my first two years in Germany, I served as a steward for the European Beer Star Competition, and in 2021, I started judging various beer competitions, including the Austrian Beer Challenge, Concours de Lyon, African Beer Cup, World Beer Cup, and Women’s Trophy.

I had already judged in several competitions in Europe, and I dreamed of participating as a juror in the largest competitions in the world and in other countries outside Europe. That’s why I applied for the World Beer Cup—it’s one of the most important competitions globally. I also wanted the opportunity to meet amazing professionals from around the world and learn more about beer. It’s truly wonderful, and I’m very proud of it.
