I was born and raised in Munich, Germany, so good beer was always a given for me—available almost anytime, anywhere, especially in our beautiful beer gardens. However, while studying in Japan, I learned that this wasn’t the case everywhere. Searching for a good Bavarian-style hefeweizen in Japan started my journey into the world of craft beer. It led to a career in the Japanese beverage industry, supplying breweries with brewing equipment, ingredients, and education to create some of the best beers we have in Japan today.

In my daily work, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to connect the brewing culture of my birthplace with the brewing culture of the place I choose to live. Nothing brings people together like beer!

The World Beer Cup is the most prestigious and well-established beer competition—a model for beer competitions worldwide. Therefore, it’s an honor and a privilege to judge at the World Beer Cup. Judging beers with industry veterans and colleagues from around the globe in such a well-organized, professional setting creates a unique opportunity to continuously learn about beer and sharpen sensory skills. I especially appreciate the discussions with fellow judges during and after the competition. Everyone’s openness to share knowledge and experience, help one another, and enjoy beer in a friendly and collegial atmosphere is amazing. I hope to participate in and contribute to the World Beer Cup for many years to come.

My interest in brewing began in college when I took a semester off and stayed with friends in the Bay Area, one of whom had taken up homebrewing. I helped him with a few batches and then dove into the deep end when I returned to school at the University of Kansas, where a homebrew supply shop had just opened in Lawrence. Many batches later, with a bachelor’s degree in art history in hand, I moved to Seattle hoping to land a brewing job. That first job paid me $6 an hour. Needless to say, I wasn’t into beer for the money—I was into it for the people, the community, the creativity, and the camaraderie.

I was fortunate to have amazing mentors, peers, and colleagues during my time brewing at Pike Brewing Company in Seattle, and later at Free State Brewing when I returned to Lawrence. Beer matters to me—or I should say, good beer matters to me. To borrow the words of Brother Epp of Capuchin Monastery in Munjor, Kansas, written in 1906 during Prohibition: “Because, without beer, things do not seem to go as well.”

Every time I judge the World Beer Cup, I learn something new and gain perspective from a diverse group of judges who may not speak the same language I do on a daily basis, but certainly speak the language of beer. It’s great to judge with German judges in German beer categories or Belgians in Belgian beer categories and get their perspective on the nuances of a classic style originating from their home country. It’s equally interesting to hear the perspective of an Argentinian or Japanese judge on these styles and learn more about the growing beer culture in their countries.

I’ve made new friends that I look forward to visiting in their home countries someday and seeing when they visit us during the World Beer Cup. Good beer brings good people together.

My journey into the beer industry began as a hobby that eventually grew into a passion for both academic and craft brewing. As one of the first certified judges at the time, I opened a craft brewery and pursued a Ph.D. in the field, all while actively judging beers. These experiences allowed me to combine my love for brewing with my scientific curiosity. Over time, my interest in fermentation science deepened, leading me to focus on beer evaluation and sensory analysis. Today, I lead research projects at Fermentis, where I continuously explore the complex dynamics of yeast, fermentation, and flavor—an area that remains both challenging and rewarding in my career.

Beer matters to me because it represents much more than just a drink—it’s a blend of science, culture, and craftsmanship. With more than 15 years of experience evaluating beers and examining the intricate relationships between microbial dynamics and flavor expression, I have gained a profound appreciation for the creativity and precision that brewing requires. Beyond its technical aspects, beer connects people and tells a rich story of tradition and innovation. Being part of this ever-evolving industry is incredibly rewarding, and I feel fortunate to contribute to its growth and development.

Judging at the World Beer Cup allows me to contribute to the global beer community while applying my expertise in sensory analysis and beer evaluation. With more than 15 years of experience in the field, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the nuances in beer styles and flavor profiles, which I bring to the judging process. It’s also an opportunity to engage with other experts, share knowledge, and help maintain high standards of quality and innovation in the industry.

For me, judging at the World Beer Cup is both an honor and a responsibility. It’s a chance to be part of one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world, where brewers showcase their passion, creativity, and technical skill. It also means helping to uphold the values of fairness and excellence in beer production. Personally, it’s a meaningful way to stay connected with the global beer community and to celebrate the diversity and craftsmanship that make the industry so vibrant.

J'ai travaillé dans l'industrie de la bière tout au long de ma carrière, mais d'abord à la périphérie, et j'y suis venu par la voie des relations publiques et du marketing. Au fur et à mesure que le monde de la bière artisanale se développait, mon intérêt et ma passion pour le sujet se sont accrus. J'ai eu la chance de commencer ma longue relation avec l'Association des brasseurs en 2006 et j'ai progressivement pris plus de responsabilités. Mon rôle s'est élargi jusqu'à ce qu'en 2019, je sois nommé ambassadeur américain de la bière artisanale pour l'Europe. C'est un honneur et un privilège de travailler pour l'Association des brasseurs et je suis incroyablement fière de la représenter, que ce soit lors de mes voyages à l'étranger ou chez moi au Royaume-Uni.

Pour moi, la bière n'est pas seulement un métier, mais un mode de vie. J'aime la grande variété de saveurs et d'arômes que l'on trouve dans la bière. Elle est très polyvalente et constitue l'accompagnement parfait des plats. J'aime la communauté de la bière et les personnes qui rendent ce secteur spécial. Tout le monde est amical, accueillant et uni dans l'appréciation commune de ce magnifique breuvage. C'est un espace de collaboration unique et je m'estime très chanceux d'être associé à certains des brasseurs les plus talentueux du secteur.

Pourquoi jugez-vous à la World Beer Cup ? Que signifie pour vous le fait d'être juge à la Coupe du monde de la bière ?

Participer à la World Beer Cup est l'apogée de mon parcours dans le monde de la bière et la référence en matière de jugement de bière. C'est comme participer aux Jeux olympiques ! La qualité de la compétition est inégalée, qu'il s'agisse de la qualité des bières présentées, du niveau élevé des juges ou du professionnalisme et du bon déroulement de l'organisation en coulisses. De toutes les compétitions que j'ai jugées dans le monde, la World Beer Cup est la plus grande, la plus prestigieuse, la plus internationale, la mieux organisée et la plus professionnelle de toutes - à mon humble avis, bien sûr !

Être sélectionné comme juge pour la World Beer Cup est un immense honneur et me remplit de fierté. J'aime juger parce que cela me permet de me concentrer sur tout ce que j'ai appris sur la bière et le brassage. Comme un athlète olympique, je dois être au sommet de mon art et c'est une perspective excitante et passionnante.

Je n'ai jugé qu'une seule Coupe du monde de la bière jusqu'à présent (2023 à Nashville), mais j'ai été complètement époustouflé par le niveau des candidatures, la qualité des juges et l'organisation de la compétition. Ce fut une expérience personnelle extrêmement riche et gratifiante, que j'espère renouveler bientôt.

Qu'aimeriez-vous que le monde sache d'autre ?

Je joue au hockey (hockey sur gazon pour mes amis américains !) dans un club du sud-ouest de Londres, et ce depuis de nombreuses années. C'est très amusant, c'est l'occasion de courir et de se défouler avant d'aller boire une bière au bar. La saison dernière, nous étions invaincus et nous avons été promus dans une ligue supérieure. Cette saison pourrait être différente ! Je suis marié, j'ai trois enfants adultes et un chien très vif.
