While studying at university, I worked in a microbiology lab. I was fascinated by microorganisms and wanted to learn more about them. After earning my degree in food science, I was determined to find a job that combined microorganisms and food. How bacteria and yeast transform flavors and aromas was—and still is—impressive to me. Fortunately, I discovered the fantastic world of beer.

My first job after graduation was as sensory lead at the largest brewery in Argentina. Today, 12 years later, I still dedicate my career to educating and spreading beer knowledge and appreciation at every opportunity.

Pourquoi jugez-vous à la World Beer Cup ? Que signifie pour vous le fait d'être juge à la Coupe du monde de la bière ?

Judging at the World Beer Cup has been a dream of mine since I started my career. I remember attending Craft Brewers Conferences and WBC awards ceremonies, thinking, “Wow, will I ever be part of this huge event?” The day I received the invitation to judge in Las Vegas in 2024 was one of the best days of my beer career. I was so excited telling everyone about it that I almost forgot to reply to the email and nearly missed out on the competition!

The news was so big in my country that I was interviewed by the most important local newspapers about my experience as a judge representing Argentina. That’s how significant being a WBC judge is to me. 🙂

After a long wait, I got to brew my first homebrew batch with friends in China, where I had some incredible beer mentors from Germany and the U.S. That later became an income, we would sell beers with our homebrew club at festivals, and later with our own homebrewery, I later got hired at a Chinese brewpub, which was my first pro job. Experimentation has always been my favorite thing about beer, luckily, when I started brewing professionally the breweries where always open for my experiments, which made me grow as a brewer. I later founded my brewery Experimento Cervecero in Costa Rica, which is now evolving from a small industrial brewery to a largely self-sustainable farmstead brewery.

Beer is about community and that has always inspired me, most times when you meet a brewer you kind of get a new friend, who knows what you’ve been through; and more often than not, the collaboration spirit is on. Sharing a passion and sharing a beer is always a great feeling.

It has been a dream come true to judge at the WBC, I would dare say the pinnacle of a judging career. I judge to learn and share knowledge and the WBC is a great avenue for this. The diversity of beer, both in style and origin is incredible, and tasting beer from all over the world is always very rewarding and exciting. The judging panel is the top of the industry worldwide, so meeting the people and sharing stories was a definite treat. Judging at the world beer cup was a clear goal when I started brewing and later on judging, and getting to do it was a great feeling.

J'ai commencé mon parcours dans l'industrie de la bière d'un point de vue scientifique, en me concentrant d'abord sur la production de connaissances scientifiques. Au fil du temps, mon parcours s'est orienté vers la science, la technologie et l'éducation, en particulier dans le domaine des sciences sensorielles. Pour moi, la bière est l'occasion de partager et d'appliquer des connaissances fondées sur des preuves, contribuant ainsi à l'évolution et à la transformation de la société et de la culture de la bière.

L'industrie de la bière, avec sa complexité et sa diversité, offre une plateforme intrigante pour l'exploration, l'innovation et la poursuite de l'excellence. Il s'agit d'un point de fusion où la science rencontre l'artisanat, où la tradition fusionne avec l'innovation et où l'art se mêle à la précision. La bière est importante parce qu'elle transcende le simple fait d'être une boisson ; elle incarne une riche tapisserie d'histoire, de culture et d'artisanat.

La bière est importante pour moi parce qu'elle représente un monde dynamique où la science et la culture convergent pour façonner un paysage vibrant et en constante évolution. Mon engagement dans l'industrie de la bière m'a permis de constater le pouvoir de la connaissance dans l'amélioration de la qualité de la bière, l'enrichissement de l'expérience des consommateurs et le développement d'une communauté passionnée. La bière n'est pas seulement une boisson ; c'est un catalyseur pour l'apprentissage, le partage et l'établissement de liens significatifs.

Pourquoi jugez-vous à la World Beer Cup ? Que signifie pour vous le fait d'être juge à la Coupe du monde de la bière ?

Le fait d'être juge à la Coupe du monde de la bière est très important pour moi à plusieurs égards. Tout d'abord, c'est une plateforme inestimable pour affiner et rafraîchir mes compétences sensorielles. L'évaluation d'une gamme variée de bières met mon palais à l'épreuve, ce qui me permet de rester à la pointe de l'évaluation sensorielle. C'est un processus d'apprentissage continu qui me permet de rester au fait des tendances brassicoles mondiales.

Deuxièmement, la participation à la World Beer Cup est une occasion extraordinaire de créer des réseaux internationaux. C'est l'occasion de retrouver d'autres professionnels, de nouer de nouveaux liens et de participer à des échanges culturels. La camaraderie entre les juges et le partage des connaissances sont des aspects inestimables de cette expérience.

En outre, la participation à la World Beer Cup offre une fenêtre unique sur le paysage mondial de la bière. Il est fascinant d'assister à l'évolution du marché de la bière dans différents pays et continents. Cela permet d'obtenir des informations précieuses sur les styles émergents, les techniques innovantes et les préférences des consommateurs en constante évolution dans le monde entier.

Juger à la World Beer Cup n'est pas seulement une évaluation des bières ; c'est un voyage immersif d'exploration sensorielle, de camaraderie professionnelle et de découverte de la bière à l'échelle mondiale. Cela me permet de rester passionné, informé et profondément connecté au monde vibrant de la brasserie.

When I was little, I had a soap and perfume collection. My dad traveled for work, and he’d bring back soaps, while my mom would bring perfume samples. I would smell them, feel the texture, and consider the shapes, colors, and ingredients. I also paid attention to my dad’s imported beers in the fridge and the food my mom was cooking. Based on aroma, I’d try to guess what was for dinner while I was upstairs in my bedroom. That was all the stage I needed to become a judge.

When I moved to Colorado, I had been homebrewing and started to become interested in what judges were doing. The bottom line is that I followed my interests and worked to learn sensory techniques about hedonics and beer styles. To me, beer is the most incredible beverage to judge because it is limitless in ingredient possibilities. Judges are instruments for what we perceive, and our job is to tap into what we sense, relay that back to the entrant, and share where it meets or misses the style guidelines—kind of like a lawyer interpreting the law. 😊

Working to the level of being accepted and invited back to judge the World Beer Cup is a career highlight. Every time I judge, I learn and grow, and the WBC is unique because it has the most robust collection of international beer judges of any competition I can point to. Judging with peers from the same country is different from judging with judges from around the world. We help each other shed more “style bias” when judging from different cultural lenses. Hands down, the WBC is *the* judge invitation to snag. I like to tell new judges the only way to get invited is to put in the work, study, taste, brew, and apply.
