How did you get into the beer industry? Why does beer matter to you?
I started as a homebrewer in 2014, but I soon realized that my true calling was service and education. After several courses, I became a nationally ranked BJCP beer, cider and mead judge, and a Certified Cicerone®. I also joined as an associate with Taberna Intrinsical, a craft beer bar in Santiago, Chile, which is a lot of work but also a lot of fun. Additionally, along with two friends, I founded Fermentilados, an educational institution, spreading the word about fermentation and distillation throughout Chile and Latin America. I recently implemented the "Sesiones de Cata en el Lago", a sensory analysis and quality service for breweries using a panel of BJCP judges, where in addition to delivering a professional and comprehensive report to brewers, we train new judges (and ourselves) and gradually gain more experience in sensory analysis.
Why do you judge at the World Beer Cup? What does judging at the World Beer Cup mean to you?
The World Beer Cup is the pinnacle of beer competitions worldwide. Tasting at this incredible event has been a lifelong dream of mine as a beer enthusiast. Given that the best beers in the world compete, I'm incredibly excited to participate, but I also feel a huge responsibility to represent my country and to give my best and provide a professional evaluation. And of course, have a lot of fun, meet with old friends, and have a pint or two with new ones.
