Custom Broker Information

Very Important for Entrants Outside the United States

Schenker Inc. is the official customs and international freight forwarder of the World Beer Cup. Their Denver office is the coordinating office for the World Beer Cup. If you elect to select a different shipper/broker, your shipment may be delayed.

The US government and FDA require that all importations of beer, including samples, are subject to FDA prior notice. Each entrant outside the US must file prior notice with the FDA. Step one is to register your facility. Visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website to register your facility.

Once your facility is registered and once you have contacted Schenker for transportation, the prior notice form must be filed. Please file prior notice at with the FDA. Schenker Inc. can assist with this if needed. The FDA product code for beer is 32ACT04.

Please contact Cindy Shahamat with any questions. When completing your commercial invoice please list your FDA Facility Registration number on the invoice.

Determining the Proper Category for Your Beer

Brewing companies entering beers in the World Beer Cup 2010 should carefully review the category and subcategory designations before registering a beer. It is imperative that beers are entered into the proper category and subcategory since judges evaluate beers on the basis of these category descriptions.

Detailed descriptions of each of the beer styles and subcategories are listed in Beer Styles. A complete set of detailed guidelines is also available by mail, fax, or e-mail upon request. To place a request, e-mail events@brewersassociation.org.

It is the responsibility of each brewing company to enter its beer in the appropriate category and subcategory. The staff of the World Beer Cup or the Brewers Association cannot aid brewing companies in this decision. Information regarding the number of entrants for a particular category of the World Beer Cup will be made available at the Awards Ceremony in Chicago, Illinois.

In an effort to eliminate the possibility of error, the World Beer Cup will fax a confirmation of your registration form for your final approval (which requires your signature) by January 21, 2010. Please provide a fax number on your registration form. Your signed confirmation form must be returned by fax to +1.303.447.2825 no later than February 4, 2010.

Labeling & Packaging

Labeling Your Beers

Brewing companies that normally bottle or can their products must send the beer in its commercially available container with the beer's standard label. All brewing companies must clearly label their entries with the name of the brewing company, the name of the beer, and the category and subcategory in which the beer will be judged. This information should match the World Beer Cup categories.

All beers produced outside of the USA without USA federal label approval must attach a label with the following text to every bottle. Place one label on every bottle (not on the bottom) without covering any portion of your beer's label. The label should read as follows:

For sample purposes only. Not for resale.
Government Warning: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery and may cause health problems.

Packaging Your Beers

Please pack your beers according to the guidelines on the back of the registration form. The World Beer Cup is not responsible for broken shipments.

Number of bottles/cans to be sent for the competition depends on the bottle/can size. Please use the following as a guideline:

Please feel free to ship extra bottles for our volunteer sorting crew that works hours in the cooler getting the competition beers sorted and inventoried for the competition.

Shipping Information

Due to higher security on shipments arriving the U.S., we strongly recommend that all World Beer Cup participants shipping beer into the U.S. from another country contact their local Schenker Inc. office to make arrangements for shipping the beer. All shipments must be routed to Denver and cannot move by small package couriers such as Fedex, DHL, or TNT. Please be sure to use Schenker Inc. as your shipper for World Beer Cup entries. We are unable to guarantee your entries will clear customs in the US if you use any other shipper. Schenker is familiar with the event and will best be able to clear your entries through customs.

If you are unable to locate a Schenker office, please contact Cindy Shahamat, Import Manager. She can be reached at cindy.shahamat@dbschenker.com or by phone at +1.720.859.6247.
